Proposal for Integrated Marketing Communication Approach (IMC):

My proposal is for Velocity Social Media to run an event on October 20, 2016, utilizing IMC which will be complementary to all non-profits wishing to attend in order to teach these companies to maximize internet marketing, particularly social media, to capture the most donations possible on Give Miami Day sponsored by The Miami Foundation. Give Miami Day is a fundraising event movement which takes place each year, every Thursday before Thanksgiving, held for a 24 hour time period where non-profits compete to best achieve the highest number of donations in that period of time.

What is Give Miami Day?

As per the Give Miami Day website, “Give Miami Day allows all individuals in our community to make a philanthropic impact by collectively supporting our local nonprofit organizations.  Twenty-four hours of giving begins at midnight on November 19 and ends at midnight on November 20, 2015.  Throughout the day, individuals may view online profiles of more than 500 nonprofit organizations serving Miami-Dade County and make a charitable gift here on givemiamiday.org.”

Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) Approach:

Velocity Social Media should utilize an integrated marketing communication (IMC) approach to run this event that is not only consistent with its method to help grow its customers’ businesses, but also applying this consistent brand messaging across both traditional and non-traditional marketing channels while using different promotional methods to reinforce each other to grow their very own business. According to the Houston Small Business Chronicle, “In the traditional approach to marketing communications, businesses and their agencies plan separate campaigns for advertising, press relations, direct marketing and sales promotions. Integrated campaigns use the same communication tools to reinforce each other and improve marketing effectiveness. In an integrated campaign, you can use advertising to raise awareness of a product and generate leads for the sales force.”

Why not help non-profits capitalize on social media to benefit good causes?

Closing Remarks

 Whether as a communications platform, education tool, selling platform or overall social activity, social media is the future and will continue to grow. Velocity Social Media stands in a position to be able to capture market share and audience growth providing educational tools to both the non-profit as well as the for profit businesses in the Miami community.

Hosting and sponsoring such an event as #DigitalGive in order to help local non-profit organizations reach a larger audience for the fundraising raising opportunities arising on Give Miami Day is an excellent way for Velocity Social Media to grow in name, reputation, branding efforts and overall visibility. Through the diverse strategies available in IMC, Velocity Social Media will apply this consistent brand messaging across both traditional and non-traditional marketing channels while using different promotional methods to reinforce each other to grow their very own business.

No other marketing agency is offering this type of service in Miami. The future looks busy and prosperous for Velocity Social Media. With the integrated marketing communication tools available, including the analytics provided with some of these IMC tools, the company is able to reach and capture an audience needing its services of #DigitalGive in preparation for Give Miami Day. The analysis and recommendations provided herein, Velocity Social Media will be able to reach that audience which will benefit from such a service.

It’s All About the Numbers…


Analytics provide a measure of how a company is performing in a given capacity. As per this week’s lecture, “Any type of data you are looking for, can probably be found through analytics.” Accordingly to Social Media Today, “, social media analytics aggregates and analyzes online conversations (industry, competitive, prospect, consumer, customer) and social activity generated by brands across social channels, while enabling organizations to act on the derived intelligence for business results, improving brand awareness and reputation, marketing and sales effectiveness, and customer satisfaction and advocacy.”

It would make sense a company would want to take full advantage of any type of analytics to which they would have access in order to use this valuable tool to help further grow their business.

XYZ Company is a heating and cooling company (HVAC) and in Western Massachusetts. They provide installations, maintenance and repair. In addition to this Facebook page, XYZ Company has a website,Twitter account, Yelp page and Google+ page. This is a recently launched small business so all of these channels are being fine-tuned as this is pretty much a husband/wife team. Facebook is one of the primary ways they are advertising in addition to sending direct mail to a 30 mile radius. They do not have an email database yet.

As a strategic marketer working closely with start-ups and other small businesses, it’s always a challenge to help companies find the right mix of integrated marketing communications to help them grow, particularly when the budget is an issue.

Though XYZ Company is small and relatively unknown, thanks to social channels such as Facebook, it is possible today to grow a small business at an affordable price level where they will be able to not only generate buzz, promote their business but do so without breaking the bank.

The above screen shot provides data on Facebook activity for one gathered over one week. Here, we can see everything from the amount of “likes”, “reach” and “engagement” particular posts obtained. Facebook provides excellent analytics for a company to analyze in order to improve their goals for their posts on that platform.

Let’s have a look at the analytics on this page.

Key Findings:

While the page likes are increasing, post reach is down dramatically. Paid media reach is not necessarily consistent, but it does average around 500. Paid posts also have a much impactful reach than organics posts placed on the page.

Mobile users outnumber desktop users.

Fans view the page for the most part around bed time, later in the day.   Fridays, Sundays and Wednesdays are the fans’ most active days of the week.

The vast majority of the fans are women between the ages of 35-44. Women between the ages of 45-54 represent the next group of fan popularity. Males between the ages of 25-34 represent the next most popular group of fans.

The fans are mostly located in the Massachusetts area. They are mainly English speakers with a few Spanish speakers as well.

Below, I detail a strategy in order to help improve the numbers the above screenshot analytics provide.

Recommended Improvements:

Firstly, from the Facebook analytics, we know when fans are most active online and when posts receive the best engagement. So, posts should be placed later in the evenings on Fridays, Sundays and Wednesdays.

Each post should be accompanied with keywords being hashtagged.

Hashtag use helps SEO (search engine optimization), the ability to improving the possibility to be found online. When a user is searching in the Facebook search bar, and they place that hashtag, chances are that post will appear along the search results. Hashtaggin also helps achieve better Google search results.

Facebook also makes it possible to generate ads with very specific audience target detailing geared to increase reach to a particular demographic who would be searching for these types of services.  Ads can be made to target potential future fans and clients with very specific interests in heating, cooling, a/c or heat repair, duct work, etc., This feature offers detailed targeting which would be very effective in helping to grow their business.  Since we know from analytics that mobile users outnumber desktop, the ads should be more so geared to the mobile feed so as to increase ROI and use dollars where they will have most reach.

Along with this, XYZ Company could also generate those detailed targeted ads with a promo code offering a discount back to their company via a landing page specifically detailing the services to which that promo code would apply. This discount could be used for any type of service the company would be offering, again, in an attempt to generate business and grow their client based. In this manner, through these detailed targeted ads, a current new clientele can be reached to broaden the number of fans and potential clients XYZ’s Facebook page has.

In addition to generating ads, XYZ company can also use the ads feature through promoted posts which are of particular interest. Promoted posts actually have a better success rate than created Facebook ads. They cost less and have a better reach.Since their paid post reach is much more successful than the organic, it would make sense to continue to boost posts to the current likes, friends of likes and even a separate target audience.

How-to videos of no more than 30-60 seconds in length can also be posted here which could even be cross-promoted together with YouTube and Vimeo. Videos are very popular with people. Moreover, these videos could even be further promoted through promoted posts.

Help from Other Channels:

The company has a website, Twitter, Yelp and G+ pages.

XYZ Company can cross promote all their posts to their different social media channels. They can link their Facebook, Twitter, Yelp and G+ pages by placing social icons on each page leading the user back to their pages. This costs nothing to them and it’s free advertising. Google Analytics can then track later which one of these referrers brings people to their website. XYZ Company can then focus on whichever referrers are engaging users with more traffic and thereby better promote those pages. Sharing content is ideal and an effective strategy that has been proven to work.

Reviews / Testimonials Tab on website and social channels. Clients adding reviews and testimonials is a powerful way to attract new potential business, too. Nothing speaks higher to a company’s credibility than word of mouth, whether via a friend of someone or a complete stranger. I would have XYZ Company encourage their loyal clients to please include positive responses on their Reviews/Testimonials tab on both the website and all social channels.

Future campaigns and posts:

XYZ Company can offer potential seasonal deals. Massachusetts has four distinct seasons. They could offer a different valuable coupon or offer for each of these seasons and promote accordingly via press releases, blog entries, Facebook promoted posts and ads, along with cross promoting to all their digital channels. On print media, they could advertise in home improvement magazines, particularly the Flyer, which has an extensive reach. All advertising, whether on print, or digital, should send the user to the company’s Facebook page by including the Facebook icon accordingly.

XYZ Company could also run a contest with the Top Fan app geared to counting who Likes, Shares and Comments the most with a suitable prize making it worthwhile to participate.

I would have XYZ Company add a YouTube page, too. Here, they could have a series of 30-second how-to videos so the homeowner may refer to for future knowledge. Properly tagging these videos will also improve XYZ Company’s organic search results. Again, hashtagging also helps.

While creativity plays a role in marketing in general, there are simple steps which can be taken to increase brand awareness, particularly through all the channels available today.  In today’s varied sophisticated digital society, it’s never been easier to grow an audience with few dollars.

Reputation Matters

We’ve all experienced positive and negative visits at different venues, particularly, hotels. I often use social sites such as TripAdvisor to read reviews about a particular hotel at which I may be interested in staying prior to making the booking.   Having this opportunity of word of mouth from a prior guest, who I most likely will not know, is invaluable.

Per Antony Young, in Brand Media Strategy on pg. 81, “Today, the relevance and importance of word of mouth has a greater than ever proportion of the mix.” Additionally, in Young’s figure 6.1 on page 82 of the text, “Independent reviews,” ranks among the Top 20 Most Influential Touch Points on Purchase.

Likewise, as Young mentions on page 90, “One of the advantages of listening to the conversation online is the ability to respond. When someone complains about your brand on the site, a marketer can listen or offer to help the complainer.”

For the purpose of this blog post, I will portray the role of a Social Media Director for two separate hotels and respond accordingly to two separate Trip Advisor reviews online.  One review is positive, the other negative. Please note, this is a SAMPLE setting, not a real-life situation.

Hyatt Regency Orlando

Our restaurants are among the finest in Orlando.  Urban Tide continuously wins Diners’ Choice Awards.  Though modern in decor and with a nightly waiting list,  Fiorenzo’s Italian Steakhouse offers Tuscan charm along with an authentic Italian cuisine.  I’m glad you were able to stay in-house and enjoy our fine eateries, while staying in the comfort of our hotel.

Our Spa offers luxurious amenities along with a 24 hour gym to help our guests burn some of those extra vacation calories.  Moreover, the Spa allows you to design your own treatment or book a specific package to suit your desires.  I’m glad your massage left you invigorated and recharged.

The shuttle service is convenient and regular, offering door-to-door service, at a fee.  Nothing beats having your own vehicle in which to get around.  Though parking at the parks is pricey, guests find having the freedom to come and go as they please offers a more pleasant experience.

Dear Luv2travelwithhubby,

Your high school reunion stay experience is completely not acceptable.  On behalf of our hotel, I apologize to you for your discomfort while our guest.

While are a popular hotel, particularly amongst international tourists, your room should have been ready for you by the time you arrived.  The roll away bed should also have been available to you, as you had requested in advance.

As you may have noticed, our hotel was experiencing a complete renovation during your stay.  Regardless, however, your shower should not have been cold and your shower head should have also been in better working form.  This would also explain aged furniture, pocket door fixture and bed.   Our rooms today include “floor-to-ceiling glass windows, a flat-screen television, luxurious bed linens and high-quality bath amenities.”

We regretfully admit housekeeping may have been disorganized during the renovation, leading to your room not having been made up the second day of your stay along with multiple calls for additional linens.  The same goes for our groundskeeping staff with regards to the pool being in disarray.

Florida can definitely get very hot.  While we have replaced our parking lot gate box as part of the renovation, we do offer covered parking as an option to avoid the elements, whether the beating sun or rain, which we get much of, too.

Nevertheless, a pleasant experience such as your 10 year high school reunion should not be marred by negative thoughts because of your hotel stay.

Ultimately, for companies experiencing negative reviews online, per Young on page 90, “Taking such a transparent, honest approach can even provide an opportunity to change a badadvocate, into a potential advocate, as long as communications are authentic and sincere.”    As the saying goes, “The customer is always right.”  A timely, well-crafted, positive response will ameliorate most negative commentaries.

WPPI 2016

For the purpose of my University of Florida Multimedia Communications class, my task was to follow, observe and critique the Wedding and Portrait Photography Expo (WPPI) which took place this past week (March 7-9) at the MGM Grand Las Vegas.

As per the WPPI website, “The WPPI Wedding & Portrait Photography Conference+Expo is the premier industry event for photographers and filmmakers specializing in the creative and business aspects of wedding and portrait photography and filmmaking. Each year, nearly 13,000 professional and aspiring photographers and filmmakers attend WPPI to learn new techniques from industry leaders, build new relationships to grow their business, experience new products and solutions from major manufacturers to improve their productivity, and enjoy the many attractions in Las Vegas. WPPI is a week-long event combining educational seminars with a major industry trade show and networking events, all designed around learning the latest techniques, building new relationships and growing a business in a friendly, fun environment – all at one time, in one place.”

 With the advanced registration available to those who have pre-registered, significant discounts can be taken advantage of. Additionally, as per the WPPI website, “New for 2016, PHOTO+ Members (WPPI, PhotoServe) Get a FREE Full Platform Pass to WPPI 2016! ”

Even like this, though, non-members are not disenfranchised but allowed to purchase a “Full Platform Pass,” allowing the access to over “80 Platform Classes.”

The three-day expo offers an array of what’s latest and greatest in all things wedding, video, photo and film related.   Anyone who makes a career from these venues would benefit from attending this trade show event.

A video promoting visiting Las Vegas is highlighted as one of the very first posts on their website, showcasing the host city.


Registration information is detailed on the home page of the WPPI website as indicated by the following screenshot:

The WPPI social media management team went above and beyond to post accordingly onto all the sites.  Posting multiple updates regularly to both their Facebook and Twitter pages, the frequency of posts using “#wppi2016” along with consistent branded content allowed for even a non-attendee as myself to have a strong grasp on what was taking place daily throughout the event.

Additionally, Facebook and Twitter were the  social media channels mostly used prior, during and after the show to showcase the different activities taking place along with connecting and engaging with the customer. Before the event, their Facebook page, showcased specials that would be offered during the event from not only sponsors, but also event attendees.   Here’s an example of such a post:

While their Twitter page posted non-stop before, during and after the event, their posts seemed to be most prevalent during as in  LIVE tweeting, particularly during their awards ceremony event as evidenced by this post:

The sponsors, among them, SmartAlbumsKodak PixproCanon,  together with many others each have their logo featured on the bottom of the WPPI website in a rotating style with dedicated informational links back to a landing page detailing their show information along with a link for a contact at that respective company, with full address details and their Facebook page link as well.

Other examples of IMC included a sign up for their email marketing newsletter in addition to a link to their Photoforward blog, where posts and content were updated several times daily showcasing events taking place along with exhibitors and sponsor activities.

A mobile application download was also made available providing access to quick mobile updates.

Though they included their YouTube and Instagram page links, in this respect, the team failed as they did not post any videos or images to these sites of the events, sponsors or participants taking place that week.  If they weren’t going to post videos or relevant images, and be current, then they should not have included those social icons to the site. That’s something that disappoints me regularly when visiting company websites.  Companies should not include social icons where regular activity and engagement are not being demonstrated.

As part of our University of Florida graduate program in Social Media, this week I’ve been tasked to be the hypothetical Social Media Manager for Disney’s EPCOT Center for the month of April 2016.   This is all hypothetical, just to showcase how, as a Social Media Manager, I’d personally plan EPCOT’s social media postings for one month.

Get Legal Advice…Get Avvo.com

According to Debra Donston-Miller of Network Computing, “There is a social network for every taste and demographic these days, and social businesses should take notice of the potential opportunities these very focused audiences provide.”

That being said, my career has always revolved around strategic sales of some sort. From my first job until today, I’ve held positions which revolve around selling. Initially, as a commodities trader, I sold a product. Today, as a social media consultant, I’m essentially selling a service.

There is an art to selling. Just as in another favorite activity of mine, tennis…a strategy is involved. In tennis, we serve or receive a serve, then we begin to construct a point accordingly from there on.

The same applies to many aspects of life, particularly a career as a self-employed individual, which I’ve been for the vast majority of my career, since my mid 20’s.

In my ideal career path going forward, I would like to forge a relationship with consulting firms such as Accenture, McKinsey and IBM, etc., in order to help them better develop the strategies social media offer in order to not only grow and improve their businesses, but to ideally also be up to date with the most cutting edge digital benefits the various social media platforms offer.

Up to now, LinkedIn was the manner in which I best knew to grow a sphere of influence with companies in this realm. Today, I now know industry-specific social media sites exist, which work much like LinkedIn groups, however, are geared exclusively to specific areas of business.

As per this week’s lecture, “Industry-specific social media sites allow you to blend your career interests into hopefully the perfect job.” While this is the goal I’d like to achieve with regards to an industry-specific social media site for consulting firms.   Unfortunately, it is challenging for such a site to exist, at least for now. The nature of consulting firms is to provide clear strategies for many different types of industries with highly educated, dedicated and talented teams of individuals who specialize in different fields. So, to narrow the industry-specific site to just one, would be challenging and perhaps, defeat their global purpose.

Sites such as Credo, where a company may search for specific social media consulting, exist. This is not an industry-specific social media channel, however.

So, an industry-specific site which forms the bulk of my clientele is found within attorneys. According to Webmarketingtoday.com, “Founded by an attorney, Avvo’s mission is to help people find legal help more quickly. “At Avvo, we provide you with detailed information on lawyers and legal issues so that you can make the choices that are right for you,” said the Avvo website. Users can rate and review attorneys, and lawyers can claim their profile, for marketing purposes.”

Let’s face it, people need attorneys. Whether it’s contractual advice, family disputes, wills, trusts, power-of-attorney documents, accidents, the public needs attorneys. Now that mobile devices will be equipped with technology to text individuals searching for legal advice, together with recent searches on mobile devices, attorneys can use the power of proximity marketing together with particular mobile technology to reach clients who may have performed recent searches near a courthouse, government or other legal-type building to reach potential new clients. They can offer services such as a one-hour complementary consultation for discovery.

Avvo also allows for attorneys to be rated based on reviews the client would leave. So, this site also doubles as a public review site to allow a future potential individual seeking legal services to make an educated decision.

What are the benefits to attorneys using Avvo?

According to Lawyernomics.com from just 4 days ago, “While most attorneys find online directories to be burdensome, it is important to recognize that positive online ratings, including those on your Avvo profile, add value to your marketing efforts. Here’s why:

  • Avvo comes up very high in Internet searches for lawyers.
  • Avvo ratings are important to the average consumer (just like Super Lawyers).

Avvo provides free online real estate that you should take ownership of. Otherwise, you look bad when people search Avvo for you or your firm.”

They also benefit with several mobile apps. http://www.avvo.com/apps, taking advantage and recognizing the need to be relevant on the mobile platform.

While I believe AVVO is a strong platform for attorneys in which to grow their business, they are missing out on much business and exposure. Though they do have social sites, ror example, their home page doesn’t have links to ANY social sites whatsoever. They spend money on search engine optimization, yet lose the ability to provide key, free, information, with the potential of further growing the business of local attorneys by not having exposure to digital platforms. This needs to change immediately. Their Facebook page does provide a similar look and feel to their main website, however, not letting the public know with those social icons listed somewhere on their website is a mistake.Screen Shot 2016-02-28 at 11.38.08 PM

Avvo also misses the opportunity to obtain funds from advertisers such as my company who could further help attorneys, too. Should they allow service consulting firms such as my digital company to also join their platform, not only would attorneys benefit from my services, AVVO could find another source of income. Moreover, through our digital growth strategies, we could also help grow such businesses.

Overall, Avvo provides an excellent platform for which to grow a business with attorneys. However, allowing for others to advertise and join their platform, on a different level, would also help their digital presence.




Into Learning? Get Learnist…

So, what’s Learnist?

Often referred to as “the Pinterest for education,” per Google, “Learnist is a learning board for the digital age. The web application itself describes a “learn board” as a “set of learnings organized as a series of steps for people to learn.” You can also look at a learning board as a container for any content that helps you understand things you are interested in.” Learnist is both an educational social media site and content community where users come together to collaborate and share knowledge. As per FeedtheNoise blog, “Everyone is an Expert About Something.”

So, as the name itself suggests, Learnist is an online content community all about learning and sharing the knowledge you may have by either collaborating or beginning your very own school of thought on any particular subject. Anything, absolutely anything, can be discussed, shared, and expanded upon on this board. Knowledge and content boards are created for all different types of subjects.

Much like Pinterest, Learnest is a content board, a tool for educational content. The images, or boards are created by the person sharing their knowledge about any given subject.

Learnist further states, “Our goal is to make the undertaking of learning a fun and engaging social activity. Everything we do is focused on improving the process of learning new things with the help of our peers.”

IdeaMensch, “Learnist allows individuals to read content, review how-to guides, and watch educational videos on virtually any subject. The content is written and curated by experts on each topic. Farbood’s goal is to make high-quality education accessible to everyone.”


Though founded by highly-decorated serial entrepreneur, teacher and all-around education guru, Farbood Nivi , per Mediapost, “Learnist officially launched in May of 2012 and is backed by Atlas Venture, Benchmark Capital, Discovery Communications, Inc., GSV Capital, Integral Capital Partners and New Schools Ventures.”

The idea or main goal behind Nivi’s Learnist is “to make the undertaking of learning a fun and engaging social activity.” Imagine what a revolutionary thought…indeed, to make learning “fun and engaging.”

Target Audience:

By no means a household name, by 2014, Learnist had grown to 10 million users and contributors alike per Society Media and Marketing Daily, exponential growth from the 1 million users in 2013. Its target audience consists of teachers, educators, instructors, students, the consummate, avid learner, hobbyists, and even those who wish to empower themselves by becoming self-educated.

For example, teachers can put together resources for class; students can get tips for board exams such as the SAT, GRE, LSAT, etc.; someone who likes to cook can better a recipe; infographics on benefits or dangers of a particular topic, travel tips, exercise, even political historical issues such as how the Electoral College works, etc., FeedtheNoise tells us “Learnist provides a fun and interactive way for teachers and students to connect, share and express their thoughts. Furthermore, educators are not restricted to creating boards with just pictures, but YouTube videos, slides, audio clips, and textbooks are just the beginning of the features available. With Learnist, learning is no longer confined to the classroom, now educators can reach students from around the globe.”

FeedtheNoise further states, “Learnist target audience is difficult to say since their site offers a variety of topics for educators to stay-at-home moms, students, business professionals, and so much more.”   Everyone is a potential user of a concept such as Learnist.  Who doesn’t want to learn, grow, expand their horizon?  Conversely, who doesn’t want to share their expertise and knowledge regarding a topic near and dear to them?


Between its launch and 2013, Learnist received $20 million seed funding from its largest investor, Discovery Communications. According to Teachthought.com, “Learnists’ users have increased by 400%, and user-engagement is up 100%.”

Moreover, As of February 12, 2016, GSV Capital had created a prospectus on Learnist, indicating, “If Learnist is able to attract a significant and loyal user base, it will have the opportunity to develop a business model with a high degree of predictability. The Company’s business model will consist of subscription, advertising and ecommerce-related revenue streams.” Potentially, Learnist may be up for sale and much like other educational tools such as Kaplan, Princeton Review and Quizlet, take learning to a business level by selling subscription tools via apps, etc., in order to monetize capital for potential investors.

Additionally, information is going entirely mobile.

As Teachthought indicates, The Learnist iPad app has evolved, making it not just functional on Apple’s mobile device, but the optimal way to actuate it. You can now add content through the iPad with fewer clicks than possible on a desktop. And a built-in Google Search function makes finding new information to add as learning dead simple.” Clearly, Learnist has capitalized on mobile devices, not just for people growth but for financial growth with the potential to sell boards via both the Apple and Google stores.

What major brands/companies/celebrities/people are using this channel effectively?

Once again, according to FeedtheNoise blog, the Learnist enlistment includes  “celebrities such as Olivia Wilde, MythBusters’ host Kari Byron, tastemaker Gus Van Sant, best-selling author Brad Meltzer.” These celebrities have created their own Premium boards, “sharing their exclusive discoveries and ideas with fans and/or potential fans.” These are the types of boards being monetized at .99 each by Learnist as per the GSV Capital report.

Additionally, per FeedtheNoise , “Learnist’s biggest notoriety has been attributed to a recent contract signed with BBC –British Broadcasting Corporation and Discovery Channel.”

Brands wishing to increase their digital presence and educate the public about their products and services may use Learnist as a vehicle to do so. Just as many of them currently have Pinterest boards where they share information, the same may create educational/informational boards on Learnist to showcase their features so that potential audience/consumers may also be acquainted with their services through this channel.
